Denver Energy Benchmarking & Building Performance Standards

The City & County of Denver in Colorado has the following energy benchmarking laws and building performance standards for specific property types.

Fast facts:

  • June 1st annual benchmarking deadline

    • 2025 Deadline Extension: September 1

  • 25,000+ sq. ft. commercial, multifamily, public, manufacturing, agricultural, and industrial (MAI) properties.

  • Additional Requirements:

    • Commercial and Multi-Family Buildings 25,000+ sq. ft.: Subject to Building Performance Standard (BPS) targets in 2028 and 2032.

      • Please note that buildings regulated by Denver’s and Colorado State’s BPS need to comply with both sets of requirements

    • MAI Buildings 25,000+ sq. ft.: Subject to the City’s BPS; However, MAI buildings may follow an alternate compliance option that is tailored specifically to their operations and processes.

    • Commercial and Multi-Family Buildings 5,000-24,999 sq. ft.: Subject to lighting or renewable energy requirements.
